Thrill to the adventures of Non-non Ito, an adorable Maltese!Book Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection Review :
The things that draw people to Ito including myself are simple, his spectacular art and boundless creativity. Retelling another persons story like he has with Frankenstien sorta takes away that second aspect. There's only so much you can do with the material of such a well known book. However the art, pacing, and intigration of the story into the manga format does save it. Some things admittedly are rushed or cut, though that's only if you know the original. But as retellings go it certianly is a good oneThe second half here deals with the strange goings on of a boy named Oshikiri. Being an Ito protagonist multiple times means this kid has seen a lot, from other dimentional science experiments to bodies in wall. He doesnt really undergo any sort of arc but he becomes very sympathetic as the supernatural events start to destroy him, emotionally, mentally, socially, and at times physcially. And the very short stories at the end are fun and creepy, the second one i think even ending on a joke. And the bits with Itos dog are cute and heart warming.Comparing this to his other works i'd say it's 2nd tier. 1st is Tomie, Uzumaki and Shiver, 2nd is Gyo, Fragments of Horror, and now this. Incidentally 3rd is Flesh Colored Horror and Dissolving Classroom. So yes overall it's a good book but not one of Ito's best. Extremely thankful to have it though, especially with Viz continuing to release his works over here. Hopfully after next years Smashed we can get something like Hellstar Remina Though I have collected his other hardcover VIZ offerings, this is the first Junji Ito story I have read, as the others are in my queue. The Frankenstein adaptation was carried off well in this manga form, abridged considerably but it hit the right high points and the monster was rendered quite fearsome, though I found myself comparing back to Bernie Wrightson's famous rendition. It was once I got into the short stories that followed that I started to understand and appreciate the weirdness hype for this author. Reading these bizarre exploits of schoolboy Oshikiri, an unreliable narrator living in a mansion on the edge of a undiscernible parallel universe reminded me a lot of Lovecraft but especially Poe. Oshikiri's manic doubts and heightened senses when he's hearing night time comings and goings could be straight out of House of Usher or Tell Tale Heart. If this is a good start, I'm looking forward to reading Uzumaki, Gyo, Tomie, Shiver and others. Recommended!
