I am writing this review with tears streaming down my face, having just finished the book. As the mother of a transgender daughter myself, going on the journey that Dr. Hassouri’s book took me on was the most affirming, cathartic, heart-wrenching, and profoundly redemptive experience I’ve ever had with a memoir. The story was my own family’s story in so many ways. The parallels were uncanny, and with every page I wanted to shout, “Yes! Yes! Please tell the world what it’s like… that we don’t make these decisions lightly, that we research, study, deliberate, question, challenge, doubt… and we cry. Oh, how we cry and cry and cry. But ultimately, we come to embrace our child’s true identity, even though no one ever taught us all that we should have known. Even as highly educated, wholehearted mothers, we did not know what we should have known to be able to properly affirm and seek care for our most beloved, our own flesh and blood, who we would do anything for. I pray that parents who read this book and do not have a transgender child, will begin to understand what it’s like for us and our children. I pray that parents who read this book who do not yet know that they have a transgender child will be better equipped to respond when the time comes. I pray that mothers like me, and like Dr. Hassouri, who now see the error of our ways in the early days will continue to work to heal the wounds we inflicted upon our children and ourselves simply because our world had not adequately prepared us for this reality, which so many will face in the coming years. If you follow Paria on social media you may have thought the journey of her daughter's coming out as transgender and the subsequent path to transitioning was easy for the family. Publicly, Paria handled it so gracefully. In her book we get a peek at the inside--the confusing initial thoughts, the gut reactions, the coming to terms with a change she never anticipated. She lays bare her love for her child alongside her initial denial.
